Emily and the Curious One is a clever and effective aide to developing interest and competence in some basic, yet critically important math skills. The use of fractions, that some students might view as boring or too difficult, are made interesting. The author introduces young characters that guide and encourage the young student to not be overwhelmed or discouraged, as they negotiate their understanding of the use of fractions. During this period of home schooling and remote learning, this book is a great aide to teachers, students and parents alike.
Emily’s story is intertwined with math theories and fun characters that add movement to the plot and help the little reader keep attention on the moral of the story which is solving problems with math. Readers grow with Emily as the subjects move from the easy to the more intricate. Simple addition expands into multiplication. Simple subtraction grows into division. Quickly building on their knowledge of fractions, students learn about Ratios and Rates and how they are used in modeling the real world. An excellent resource!
This book is absolutely wonderful. As a math/special education teacher I found it easy to read and easy for my students to understand fractions. The pictures and diagrams are great and it's explained in a way that even someone who does not like math at all will enjoy learning fractions.
As an adult in my 50's, I've always shuddered at the thought of doing fractions, immediately changed them into decimals and grabbed the calculator. Along with an interesting story line and cute characters, Mr. Jack's book about the Curious Ones helped me understand fractions to the point where I can now do them without fear or decimals! Thank you for helping me send my own Mr. Migno down the road.

What a beautiful concept. A book about STEM, written using the principles of STEAM. As everyone knows the A in STEAM stands for Art. So to fully implement STEM we use the arts. Which is exactly what this book does. We see literary art or story telling as the main tool. We find colorful font art that highlights important concepts. The use of graphic arts brings life to the animated figures in the book. Examples of STEM come from the culinary arts, architectural arts, gym class arts, consumer arts, medical arts and astronomical arts appear on almost every page.
